From Potential to Production

Valley and Kusto Group Bring Sustainable Agriculture to Central Asia

Valley Irrigation is advancing its collaboration with the Republic of Kazakhstan and announcing its joint venture with private holding company Kusto Group. The strategic, multi-year project will improve sustainability and resource conservation, introduce advanced farm technology to local farmers in the region, and serve as the foundation for making the country an agricultural hub in Central Asia.

Signing on for Sustainability and Food Security

The recently signed Agreement on Investments with the Government of Kazakhstan provides for the construction of a plant in Kazakhstan to manufacture Valley pivots, with an annual production capacity of at least 1,000 center pivot and linear irrigation machines. Valmont and Kusto have registered their Joint Venture with the Astana International Financial Centre in Nur-Sultan, the capital of Kazakhstan.

Efficient Irrigation Technology

Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country in the world by land mass – the world’s largest landlocked country – with a population of 18 million. Kazakhstan possesses many natural resources and seeks to tap into its huge potential.

Transforming Agriculture in the Region

Agriculture is already an important economic sector in Kazakhstan, but there is room for further growth through improved efficiency. 81% of Kazakhstan is potentially cultivatable agricultural land, while 80% of Kazakhstan is predominantly arid steppe or desert. The convergence of those statistics, along with the country’s underutilized water channels and hydroelectric system, highlights the importance of precision irrigation in the region.

Water efficiency

In 2018, 67% of the nation’s total water consumption was for irrigation. Center pivots from Valley are up to 55% more water efficient than other irrigation methods predominantly used in the region. When durable center pivots are combined with additional precision irrigation technology, the efficiency and yield potential are further increased.

Modernizing Kazakhstan’s Canal System

Valley is supporting the Kazakh government to improve their existing canal system, parts of which have not been used to their full potential. At the request of Magzum Mirzgaliyev, Kazakh Minister of Geology, Ecology & Natural Resources, members of the Daugherty Water for Food Institute (DWFI) recently visited Kazakhstan to examine the water scarcity situation within Arys River basin and the Turkistan Canal.

DWFI was instituted by Valmont founder Robert B. Daugherty as a way to continue the mission of feeding and clothing the world while using fewer resources. DWFI will support by sustainably develop water resources for agriculture and irrigation, examining required infrastructure needed, as well as surface and groundwater use policy changes. Similar research and consultancy in Brazil, sub-Saharan Africa and India have produced significant water savings while equipping future generations with the knowledge for sustainable farming practices.

Increasing Irrigated Land

Over the last 50 years, the amount of irrigated land in the world has more than doubled. Irrigated land represents only 20% of all farmland yet produces 40% of all yields. Realizing the “multiplier effect” that irrigation has on production, Kazakh officials are eager to team with Valley and expand their irrigated hectares. Currently Kazakhstan has 1.5 million hectares (about 3.7 million acres) of irrigated land, mostly in the south. Minister Mirzagaliyev notes that Kazakhstan plans to increase the area of irrigated land to 2 million by 2022, and to 3 million hectares (7.4 million acres) by 2030.

Employment Opportunities

Fifteen percent of Kazakhstan’s population is employed in agriculture. This collaboration will create 77,000 permanent jobs, contributing to a gross agricultural output of 165 billion tenge ($384 million USD) per year. In turn, this will create a further multiplier effect in the areas of trade, processing and animal husbandry.

A Roadmap Toward Transforming the Region

The agreement will create a network of farms designed to demonstrate advanced irrigation technologies and train local farmers in responsible water management. Valley solutions manufactured in Kazakhstan will serve the domestic market and act as a hub for exports to the region. The first step in this new agreement began with a partnership between Valley and the Barayev Scientific and Industrial Centre for Grain Farming, focused on educating farmers from the region. Located approximately 60 km from the capital, the Barayev Institute is strategically located in one of the country’s oldest agricultural centers.
